I’ve been reading through the Gospel of Luke lately. I’ve been trying to bear down more on those stories that we “think” we know so well and scan over. So, as I was reading through the other day I came to the story of Jesus being tempted by the enemy in the desert (Luke 4:1-12). Here’s what I took note of…
- Jesus was lead into the wilderness by the Spirit, not the enemy (v. 1)
- Jesus was equipped to fight the enemy. He KNEW the Scriptures and was FULL of the Holy Spirit (v. 1, 4, 8, 12)
- The enemy’s first attack attempted to get Jesus to distrust God’s provision (v. 3)
- The enemy’s second attack attempted to get Jesus to distrust God’s power (v. 5-7)
- The enemy’s third attack attempted to get Jesus to distrust God’s protection (v. 9-10)
- The enemy left Jesus TEMPORARILY after the last temptation, for a more opportune time (v. 13)
I know those may seem like random notes, but to me they were very significant. I learned…
- The Spirit will allow me to face the enemy to grow my faith in action
- We are equipped to fight the enemy through His Scripture and HIS Spirit
- Just like with Jesus, the enemy’s attacks are always centered on tempting us to distrust God’s provision, power and protection
- The enemy will attack us at our lowest points, when we are probably too weak to fight & all we’ll have to fight are the Spirit & Scripture (which we should be “filling up” on when we are healthy & weak)
Its inevitable the enemy is going to attack. We have to be ready (stay in the WORD) and remember that most of the spiritual warfare we face isn’t centered on simply attacking us, but at attacking our trust in God.
Just what I’m learning…
