This Sunday we are kicking off a brand new KidSpring series called “Beach Blast!” New series are alot of fun and a lot of work!! Our KidSpring weekly volunteer team (lead by the amazing Tiffany Tucker) has been killing it this week with new small & large group materials and activity stations!! Sunday is going to ROCK FACE!! :-)

One of the fun projects I got to work on was creating 2 sign stands that will serve as “set pieces” for our new set design. Being “portable” we’ve learned that pieces like this are more than just a stick & a stand with a sign. To ensure the piece’s excellence & longevity it must be…

  • Created in multiple pieces to maximize weekly storage
  • Able to be set up & broke down without tools
  • Constructed in a way that doesn’t weaken through multiple assemblies & weekly storage
  • In other words, if we build it like a German tank, it won’t store well & if we build it too weak & storable it won’t hold up well for the entire series.

So, after talking to the AMAZING Andy Blagg (Sound Director at our NewSpring Greenville campus) he gave me a great idea on how to do this with just one 2X4X8, 8 screws & one small bolt and washer (that’s less than $4 per sign). Pictures are below of the sign assembled & broke down. Here’s how to build it, if you’re interested…

  • Purchase one 2X4X8, 8 screws & one small bolt and washer
  • Measure, mark & saw four 1 foot pieces from the 2X4
  • The remaining piece will give you a 4 foot post (cut down according to desired sign height)
  • Take the four 1 foot pieces & place in pattern shown below
  • Place the post in the middle to mark where each 1 foot piece should go
  • Mark where each 1 foot piece connects & remove post
  • Drill two holes & drive two screws in each 1 foot piece to keep all four connected
  • In the center you should now see where a 2X4 can fit & stand without needing to be screwed in
  • Drill a hole through your sign & post (size of bolt)
  • Assemble pieces together & your done!
  • The great thing is, even if your not “portable” a sign like this is great! It allows you to easily store it when a series is over & reuse when called for again! Here are the pics, I hope this helps..? :-)

    Just what I’m learning… :-)
