There is an interesting commercial out right now by ‘Mountain Dew.’ The most interesting part to me though are the thoughts and questions that were asked to get to this final product…


I’ve been reading a series of post Jim has been doing on questions. I find it very interesting and insightful. I too am a fan of questions!

Take for instance the commercial above. An idea like this didn’t just come to the creative minds at Mountain Dew. Chances are it came from hours spent around a table asking questions. But not just any questions.

I believe questions are the means to reaching a successful product or strategy. Questions help us find the creative solutions that we crave so desperately. However, it is impossible to have a creative solution without the right questions. Why? Solutions are the product of questions. To find the most creative solutions we have to ask the right questions, but what are they…?

  • Who is our target audience?
  • Where is the vision taking us?
  • What are we trying to communicate?
  • What is the goal (the core at its most simple point)?
  • What are we trying to accomplish?
  • What is our biggest barrier?

Questions can be very effective but they can also be very offensive. I’ve learned that when we ask questions we must make sure we do it in the right way. Our goal should be to ask the right questions in a way that leads others & ourselves to collectively find the best possible solution, not in a way that shut things down.

Questions matter, but when we ask them in a way that shut people down or cause walls to go up, we defeat the purpose…and we are to blame. Our heart should be to ask questions in a way that shows our heart…a heart that shows we are head over heals in love with Jesus and on board with the vision.

Ironically though if I had to choose between ‘the right questions’ or ‘the creative solution’ I would choose ‘the creative solution’ every time! The creative solution leads to action steps and thats how we get things done! :)

    I too have been reading Jim’s questions and have been asking them of myself. Sometimes a creative solution comes first and then we go through it to see if it answers the questions. We then may tweak the creative solution to make it fit our target audience or answer other questions.

    I think the biggest killer of creativity is the belief that things can’t be done that way. The best way to get creativity out is to allow all ideas to get out on the table without any of them being shot down by anyone. If everyone has the freedom to say whatever they want without having to fear rejection of their ideas, then, in time, the best ideas get on the table and people can start thinking outside the box. That takes time, but it’s worth it if you really want to work toward new, creative ideas.
