One of the things I’ve had the privledge of doing with my new role (Greenville Campus Children’s Director) is learning! I convinced, more than ever, that leaders have to be learners! If we aren’t learning…we aren’t leaders! Leaders grow!
A great example of this is how God has stretched me in the way I think. I think, many times, all people get into a groove of ‘how they think’ and continue to always operate that way. There’s only one problem with that…the way we see things doesn’t matter if we can’t see how others see them!
What I mean is, many times we get in a groove of saying/doing things and it never changes. This is dangerous in two ways…
- It can develop (unknowingly) a language/culture that limits understanding and growth.
- It can cause us to never see the developing problems (retroactive fixes vs proactive solutions)
We have to be willing to change our perspective on things so that we enable change, not disable it!
For example, here are some questions I have been asking myself lately to stretch my perspective on things…
- How does a new volunteer interest know where they want to serve in CM?…they are new!
- What matters more, full rooms of volunteers or volunteers in their sweet spot?
- When I say, “you’ll go to the ______ room’ does a new person get that?”
- Does every conversation have to be deep and long or can they be just encouraging and short?
- When I call a volunteer and they see “NewSpring Church” on the caller ID do they let out a big sigh?
- Do I send weekly emails to keep volunteers informed or to make myself feel better?
- What is the best way for me to train volunteer leaders (not volunteer managers)?
- What works well vs what is working flawlessly…and why?
I know, those may be bad examples, but hopefully it makes sense where I am leading with it…? What about you? What are some questions you have been asking yourself lately? How are you changing your point of view?
