Let’s be honest, recruiting isn’t something that just happens with volunteers because recruiting requires volunteers to…
- SEE the BIG picture
- LOVE what they do (so much they tell everyone)
- HAVE ownership in the ministry
- Be HELD accountable
- FEEL like ‘recruiting’ isn’t the ‘most important’ thing
If we look at the list, we all could probably spot some reasons as to why our volunteers may not be recruiting. However, I think there is one more BIG reason…we make it too hard.
I’ve been in those vision casting moments when we ask them to recruit them 2-3 people per year. I’ve crunched the numbers to see how that would look at the end of the year. The problem is…we rarely ever get there.
It’s not our volunteers fault…it’s ours! Think about it…2-3 people per year…that can be a lot, but what if we radically changed that. What if we simplified that to just 1 person per year?
Sound too small? Well, let’s crank out some numbers based on the following hypothetical criteria…
- Our kid’s number double every 5 years
- We cast the vision of praying for, investing in, and recruiting 1 person/year
- We have 50% success with that each year
Scenario A

.
.
.
.
- From 1/30 ratio to a 1/8 ratio
Or…
Scenario B

.
.
.
.
- From a 1/10 ratio to an almost 1/3 ratio
This doesn’t even count the normal volunteer growth you may experience through church growth alone. Amazing huh?
The difference is simple…we made it simple for them. It’s a BIG vision for us all, but BIG vision is best ‘worked out’ in small radical steps.
None-the-less, for this to work (period) we have to take care of the volunteers we have, make sure they are in their ‘sweetspot’ and cast vision like crazy!
