If you follow me on twitter you know that last week I was in an automobile accident. Here are the ‘cliff notes’ of what happened…

  • A truck lost a ladder on interstate.
  • The ladder become lodge under a car (3 cars in front of me) causing it to stop.
  • The 2 cars in front of me stopped on a dime.
  • I didn’t have time to stop.
  • I swerved to the right to dodge the car in front of me.
  • In doing so, I lost control out to side causing me to ‘fishtail’ and spin out.
  • My passenger’s side front made impact with the back of car with the ladder under it.

Wrecks are scary! Looking back, the adrenalin carries you through it and shortly there after, but when you have time to reflect on it all…it’s scary! So, I thought I would take a few seconds to share with you guys what God taught me through this experience…

HE is in CONTROL

There’s a split second before impact where you know (without a shadow of a doubt) “I don’t have control right now!” The truth is, we never do…He does. Life and ministry are full of “impact moments” where we realize we aren’t in control; our comfort is in knowing HE IS! :)

EXPECT the UNexpected

If someone told me Tuesday morning to take another route home because a ladder would fall in the interstate…I would’ve probably listened, but who would have expected that to happen? Life and ministry are full of the unexpected…expect it and know, we’ll never see it coming!

JUST stuff

The car is totaled and that stinks but you know what…I’m not worried about it! As my dad said, “We don’t pray for cars, we pray for people.” Insurance can replace everything except people. Sure, I could freak out about the financial details, but where does that put my faith in God?

LIVE LIFE

I thank God everyday that it wasn’t my time to go (or anyone else’s)! Walking away from the accident was a HUGE blessing that I can’t stop thanking God for! For me, it’s a reminder to make everyday count! To spend every moment I can with the ones I love (particularly my wife) and to share Jesus with others every single chance I get! I want to live life like the gift it is! :)

I don’t say all this to sound “Holier than thou”…trust me, I’m still learning so much! I think when anyone goes through an experience that shakes us up a little it causes us to reflect a little bit. This is me reflecting… :)

Glad ‘pudge’ didn’t become a ’smudge’ on the highway! Great reflections - awesome the stuff God teaches us along the way. yeah, who woulda thought to say, “Watch out for ladders today!” :o ) As my dad used to say, “Life is what happens when you are making other plans.”
