Picking up from yesterday…
just DO it
Picking up off the ‘the need to feel needed’…as leaders we will also be tempted ‘to do’ a lot. We will look at our list and ‘do’ more tasks than we should ever touch as a leader.
It’s not because “we’re too good” to do them. It is because God has put SO MANY people around us (like volunteers) who want to help do these things and every time we ‘hoard’ our list of To-Do’s we are ROBBING them of their joy in serving.
We would rather call a volunteer on a schedule than call their volunteer leader and ask them to make the call. We would rather do the weekly prep than get on the phone and find volunteers who WANT to do it! We would rather because in many ways it’s easier for us to ‘just do it’ but as growth kicks in…we can’t keep up and we hit THE WALL.
Another reason we would rather ‘just do it’ is because our initial gut feeling here is guilt…we feel guilty for just ‘handing off tasks.’ The truth is, we shouldn’t just ‘hand off tasks’ and we shouldn’t see it that way. As leaders, it’s our job to give people the opportunities to have ownership in the ministry. God’s given us the people…who have we given the opportunity?
the COMFORT of the here and now
As leaders, any decisions we make should rarely ever be based on just the ‘here and now.’ I’m learning that as leaders we have to see 5 months/years out and always bring that into account, but still be right there walking the same steps as everyone else (1 step ahead is a leader, 10 steps ahead is a martyr).
The temptation is to ‘make a call’ today that just works for today. We will say, “we just can’t worry about what’s coming down the road right now…we aren’t there yet.” Some of that may be true, but the reality is…its procrastination and fear.
We fear we won’t know how to answer questions of the future yet so we avoid them and the procrastination costs us. Factoring in the future to our decisions doesn’t mean we have all the answers for the future. Just means we are thinking about the future before it gets here!
