A great friend of mine brought me back a book from Catalyst last week that they were apparently giving away. I was blown away by the gesture …”how kind of her to think of me!” I took it home and began to dig in and DANG…it’s good stuff!

What book is it? This one…

Its a book called, “Tribes” by Seth Godin (he’s a best seller kinda guy). The concept of the book (to copy Amazon) is this…

Tribes is a book about marketing, apparently, except it’s actually about leadership.

We see Tribes behind every successful brand, organization, politician, non profit and cause. And yet it seems almost impossible to attract a tribe. In this book, I try to explain that the challenge is leadership, not marketing or hype.

I’ve only just begun to dig in but I am loving it so far! It has such great insight and tokens of wisdom that every leader (or potential leader) should grab a hold of and sink into! Here are some of my favorite “tokens” so far…

  • A tribe is a group of people connected to one another, connected to a leader, and connected to an idea.
  • A group only needs two things to be a tribe: a shared interest and a way to communicate.
  • People want connection and growth and something new.
  • When asked to join something new people want to know two things: who’s going with me and who’s going to lead us?
  • You can’t have a tribe without a leader—and you can’t be a leader without a tribe.
  • One of the most powerful of our survival mechanisms is to be part of a tribe, to contribute to (and take from) a group of like-minded people.
  • There’s an explosion of new tools available to help us lead the tribes we’re forming. Facebook, and Ning and Meetup and Twitter.
  • All of it is worthless if you don’t decide to lead.
  • All of it goes to wast if your leadership is compromised, if you settle, if you don’t commit.

Again, I’m just getting started but I am loving it so far! Look for a good book? Check this one out, it’s short, simple and insightful! :)

What book are you reading now? Maybe I should check that one out too? :)
