I’m not sure when it happened, but somewhere along the way, I changed. Somewhere along the way my greatest concern wasn’t failure anymore, but (overcoming) fear! Maybe its who I’ve been all along, it just took time for it to develop? I don’t know, but regardless, at some point I became a “risk-taker!”
Sounds rebellious doesn’t it? Like I should be wearing a snug-fitting black leather jacket with shades on (even at night), right? Not really. The misperception is that ALL risk-takers are thrill seeking & rebellious. I really believe it’s understood better when we realize there are healthy and unhealthy risk-takers.
Unhealthy risk-takers…
- seek personal gratification
- rebel every chance they get
- dishonor & disobey the authority over them
- don’t count the cost if each risk
- wallow in pride
- care only for themselves
- are focused only on their next big thrill
Health risk-takers…
- seek the greater good
- show restraint
- honor & obey the authority over them
- seeks council & count the cost of each risk
- desire humility
- care for others
- are passionate about finding the best way possible, for everyone
Unhealthy risk-takers are a plague that drain & hurt everyone around them. No one trusts them because their actions prove others can’t trust them. Which only sends them in a more rebellious down-spin where they find their only satisfaction & pleasure in the next (unhealthy) thrill.
Tragically, I’ve been both! If you knew my past, it would tell you the story of a different (unhealthy) man…now, one changed, saved man…a healthy one! (because of Jesus, not me)
Being a risk-taker isn’t wrong, but our motives behind each risk, can be! Somethings aren’t “ours” to risk & the restraint we learn in not taking those risks, helps us to become a more healthy risk-taker! After all, aren’t we all called to “risk” (sacrifice) it all for the growth & advancement of the Gospel in our lives & in others!? The calling wasn’t to risk (sacrifice) it all for our own selfish gain or us being “right!”
- Are you a risk-taker!?
- Are you a healthy or unhealthy one?!
- What’s your motivation!?
Just what I’m learning…
