Over the years I’ve learned that the best way to get someone to come to church…is personal invitation! That’s not to say that billboards, T-shirts and ads don’t work, I think they do! However, the most successful method of getting people in the doors and taking that first step, is to ask them!

Likewise, I’m finding that the most successful way to get new people volunteering in our ministries is to…ask them. Many times we stray from this because…

  • We don’t want to PUSH something on them
  • They might not like our area of ministry
  • It can be awkward
  • They might say no…

The truth is these are all legitimate fears, but they don’t take away from the fact that “the ask” works. At the same time I’ve learned that I should be prayerful with every conversation. Realizing that my role is to help people take their next step…whatever that may be.

Many times people are just standing there waiting for someone to ask them to take their next step and get plugged in volunteering. That being the case, “the ask” is such a powerful tool to help others find their “sweet spot!”

I’ve just got to be willing to ask…

For me, I’ve learned that networking with others is very important. Also, I’ve found that there are many new ways out there to do this without it taking insane amounts of time and energy. But how do we network and why? Well, I can only speak for myself…

how do i network?

My blog

  • The heart of starting this blog was to connect with others and share what God is teaching me. Through that I hope also to learn from what God is teaching others in their lives, at their church or in their ministry!

Twitter

  • Twitter is a cool new toy out there that connects people to what ‘others are doing.’ For me its fun to hear about other people’s life experiences. Also, many times there are pearls of wisdom (or just a good laugh) I can catch from those I follow.

CMconnect

  • CMconnect is a new (free) online network tool, created by Michael Chanley, to help people in CM connect. It’s a place where CM people from all over the world can come together to meet and learn from each other. It’s awesome!

CM Roundtable

  • The CM Roundtable is an online event I do through talkshoe.com, once a month. The heart and soul of this is to provide a cost efficient way for CM people to learn from each other. It’s basically a ’roundtable’ that happens online, without the expense and time of travel.

why do i network?

1) To glorify God.

  • Side Note here: I NEVER want to network to ‘make me famous.’ I ONLY want to network to ‘make HIM famous.’ If it EVER becomes about ‘me’ more than about ‘Him’ it’s time to hang it up and walk away.

2) To learn from what God is teaching others.

3) To learn new ways of doing things that are probably way better than what I’m doing.

4) To keep a pulse on what happening in culture, CM, and all around.

4) To be an encouragement to others in ministry.

5) To share what God is teaching me through my life experiences.

What about you? How do you network? Why do you network? I’d love to hear all about it! :)
