We can’t lead what we don’t love because if we don’t love it, we won’t really lead it. We may “watch over” it or “maintain” it at best, but we won’t really lead it.
For me, I can see this applying through many situations in life…
Places/Organizations
If we don’t love the vision behind what we are leading or the place/body itself we can’t lead it. We can’t lead it because, at the heart of it, we don’t really care about it.
Events
Getting people to come to an event & be an active participant (that’s excited & leaves feeling like it was time well spent) takes someone who LOVES and believes in the event itself. Going through the motions will eventually put us at events with an attendance of “1″…just us.
People
This is my BIG one right now because God is stretching me on it (& the leaders we invite to lead with us)! You can not lead people you do not love! Not well at least. We won’t want to be around them, share life with them or take care of them. We will only want to simply relay information and bark commands…which, in it’s solitude, doesn’t make us a leader, it makes us a personified email at best
In the end the question we must ask is “why am I (or why do l want to) lead “X?”"
If the answer is “b/c I LOVE “X” and I want to help it become the best it can be using the gifts & service God gave me!” Then that’s a great thing & God is honored as long as we stay obedient to Him in carrying out that passion!
If the answer is “b/c I LOVE me and I want to help my career/pride/self to succeed! I want to capitalize on opportunities that help me and others believe in me.” Well, then that’s a not great thing & God is NOT honored b/c we are creating an idol in ourselves & robbing God of His glory!! (by the way, we never admit to this one)
We can’t lead what we don’t love.
Love for self isn’t a qualification or manifestation of the spiritual gift of leadership.
Leading what we LOVE still has to operate in obedience to God & for His glory.
Just what I’m learning…
